Your skin, your Confidence: The Truth about Microneedling!

A little knowledge, a little self-care, and a better understanding of what your skin really needs.

How often do you look in the mirror and feel that your skin looks a little different from how it used to? Perhaps you have noticed fine lines, enlarged pores, old acne marks, uneven texture or a lack of radiance. Maybe your skin looks tired even when you feel perfectly fine.

And if you are a man, perhaps you have started noticing deeper expression lines, visible pores or marks left behind by acne, but you have never really considered professional facial treatments.

Whatever your concern, I want to remind you of something important: taking care of your skin is not about vanity, age or gender. It is about feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin.

In O.A. Clinic by Mariana Herrera, I believe that beautiful skin begins with understanding it. That is why I would like to talk to you about one of the most discussed skin rejuvenation treatments today: microneedling.

Whether you have already heard about it or are discovering it for the first time, let's explore what it can do, what you should realistically expect and how to make informed decisions about your skin.

What Is Microneedling, and Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Microneedling is a professional skin treatment that uses very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny punctures activate the skin's natural repair response and can stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that help support the skin's structure and elasticity.

As we age, our skin gradually changes. Collagen production declines, cell renewal becomes less efficient, and years of sun exposure, hormonal changes, stress and environmental factors can influence the way our skin looks.

Microneedling works with the skin's natural healing processes rather than simply covering visible imperfections.

Depending on your individual skin condition and treatment plan, it may help improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing.

  • Uneven skin texture and enlarged pores.

  • Certain types of acne scars.

  • Dullness and an uneven-looking complexion.

  • Skin that appears less firm or smooth.

  • Overall skin radiance.

However, every skin is different. Results depend on several factors, including your skin concerns, the treatment approach and how your skin responds. Microneedling is not a magic solution, and it cannot guarantee that every imperfection will disappear.

What it can offer is an opportunity to work towards healthier-looking, smoother and more refined skin with a professional approach.

Is Microneedling Only for Women? Absolutely Not!

One of the most common misconceptions about skincare is that professional treatments are mainly for women.

The truth is that men experience many of the same skin concerns. Acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, sun damage, fine lines and changes in firmness do not discriminate between genders.

Men may also have specific concerns related to shaving, beard-area irritation or ingrown hairs. These issues require an individual assessment, particularly if the skin is inflamed or sensitive.

For some men, a skincare routine simply means washing their face and applying moisturiser. There is nothing wrong with keeping things simple, but professional treatments may offer additional options when ordinary skincare products are no longer enough to address a particular concern.

And for women, professional skincare is not just about looking younger. It can be about feeling comfortable without makeup, improving the appearance of acne marks, maintaining skin quality or simply making time for themselves.

Healthy-looking skin has no gender. Self-care is for everyone.

Whether you are a woman or a man, the right starting point is the same: understanding your skin, identifying your priorities and choosing a treatment that makes sense for you.

The Questions People Often Ask Before Microneedling

1. Does microneedling hurt?

It is completely normal to feel nervous before trying a new treatment, especially one that involves needles.

The sensation varies from person to person. Some people describe it as mild prickling or scratching, while others experience more discomfort depending on their sensitivity and the area being treated.

Your comfort, skin condition and treatment settings should always be considered by the professional performing the procedure. Depending on the treatment, appropriate preparation may help improve comfort.

You should never feel pressured to continue with a treatment if you are uncomfortable. Asking questions beforehand is always encouraged.

2. Will my skin look red afterwards?

Temporary redness, sensitivity, warmth or mild swelling can occur after microneedling. The intensity and duration vary according to the individual and the treatment performed.

This means you should plan your appointment with your schedule in mind, especially if you have an important event, photographs or a social occasion coming up.

Following the aftercare instructions is essential. Avoid experimenting with new active skincare products immediately after treatment, and ask your professional when it is appropriate to resume your normal routine.

3. How many sessions will I need?

There is no single answer that works for everyone.

Your needs depend on your skin condition and your goals. Someone seeking a general improvement in texture may have a different treatment plan from someone concerned about established acne scars.

Some concerns may require a series of treatments, with time between sessions to allow the skin to recover. Improvements can be gradual, and more than one session may be recommended.

This is why I believe in individual treatment planning rather than promising identical results to every client.

4. Can microneedling completely remove acne scars?

Microneedling may help improve the appearance of certain acne scars, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

Acne scars vary in type, depth and severity. Some respond better to particular procedures than others, and a combination of approaches may sometimes be considered by a qualified professional.

If you have active acne, inflamed skin or a history of abnormal scarring, an assessment is especially important before considering treatment.

The goal is to establish realistic expectations and choose an approach that is appropriate for your skin.

5. Is microneedling suitable for every skin type?

Not necessarily.

Although microneedling may be suitable for a range of skin tones, that does not mean it is appropriate for every person or every skin condition.

Active skin infections, certain inflammatory conditions, irritated skin and some medical circumstances may make treatment unsuitable or require additional precautions.

A professional assessment helps identify potential risks and determine whether microneedling is the right option for you. If it is not, another treatment or a different skincare approach may be more appropriate.

What About Pores, Fine Lines and Dull Skin?

Sometimes, it is not one specific concern that bothers us. It is the combination of several small changes.

You may notice that makeup no longer sits as smoothly on your skin. Your pores seem more visible in photographs. Your complexion looks uneven, or your skin seems to have lost some of its natural freshness.

For men, similar concerns may appear as rough texture, visible acne marks or skin that looks tired after long working days, shaving and sun exposure.

Microneedling may help improve certain aspects of skin texture and the appearance of fine lines. However, visible pores cannot simply be erased, and not every skin concern has the same cause.

Dehydration, sun exposure, genetics, hormonal changes and your existing skincare routine can all influence your complexion.

This is why I always encourage a broader approach to skincare. Sometimes the best plan includes professional treatments; sometimes it begins with improving your daily routine, protecting your skin from the sun or choosing more suitable products.

The most effective approach is the one that responds to your actual needs, not simply the latest trend.

Your Everyday Habits Matter More Than You Think

Professional treatments can play an important role in a skincare plan, but the way you care for your skin between appointments matters too.

Here are five habits I recommend making part of your routine:

1. Cleanse gently. Choose a cleanser suited to your skin type. Over-cleansing or using harsh products can leave your skin feeling uncomfortable and irritated.

2. Moisturise consistently. Hydration helps support the skin barrier and can improve the appearance and feel of your skin.

3. Protect your skin from the sun. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect against UV damage, which contributes to premature skin ageing and uneven pigmentation. Remember that sun protection matters throughout the year, not only during summer.

4. Be careful with active ingredients. Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other active products can be useful for some people, but they are not suitable for every skin type or every situation. Introduce them thoughtfully and seek professional guidance if you are unsure.

5. Give your skin time. Constantly switching products or expecting overnight results can make it difficult to understand what works for you. Consistency is often more helpful than chasing every new trend.

And one more thing: do not forget that sleep, stress and general wellbeing can influence how your skin looks and feels. Skincare is part of taking care of yourself as a whole.

Why Professional Advice Makes a Difference

Social media is full of impressive before-and-after photographs and promises of perfect skin. While these images can be inspiring, they do not tell the whole story.

Lighting, camera angles, editing, individual skin conditions and the time between photographs can all affect how results appear.

Your skin deserves more than a comparison with someone else's photograph.

Before choosing microneedling, you should understand what the treatment involves, what results may realistically be achieved, the possible side effects and the aftercare required.

You should also feel comfortable discussing your concerns, asking questions and explaining what you hope to improve.

In O.A. Clinic by Mariana Herrera, I want you to feel informed, listened to and confident about your skincare decisions. My philosophy is not to recommend a treatment simply because it is popular, but to help you understand your options and decide what is suitable for you.

Sometimes microneedling may be worth considering. Sometimes another treatment or a carefully chosen home-care routine may be a better starting point.

The priority should always be your skin, your safety and your individual goals.

A Little Reminder

Dear community, you do not need to wait until your skin becomes a major concern before giving it attention.

You do not need to be a certain age to start caring about skin quality. You do not need to wear makeup to deserve a facial. And you certainly do not need to be a woman to enjoy the confidence that comes with looking after yourself.

Whether you want to address acne scars, improve the appearance of fine lines, refine uneven texture or simply understand your skin better, taking the first step can be as simple as asking the right questions.

If you have been considering microneedling in Amsterdam, or you would like personalised advice about professional skincare, I would love to welcome you to O.A. Clinic by Mariana Herrera.

Let's talk about your skin, your concerns and your goals, and explore the options that may be right for you.
